Smoke was reported on board the 'Johan Fjort' in Tromsø-Breivika in pos. 69° 41' N 018° 60' E on the afternoon of Jan 14, 2026. The 16 crew members were safely evacuated without injuries. At 5:40 p.m. the fire department entered the ship. Four smoke divers, tow of the crew in cooperation with tow of the fire brigade, found that the smoke was most likely coming from the electrical system, with no open flames. After a report about an increase in temperature, the police, in cooperation with the Port of Tromsø, cut off the power to the vessel. The fire crews then spent time finding the source of the fire, and were eventually able to rule out that it was the battery room, but an adjacent room. At 6:20 p.m. the situation was under control. On Oct 28, 2011, at 4:24 a.m. the Rescue Coordination Centre in Southern Norway received a message that the "Johan Hjort" with 25 men on board was in danger of running aground off the island Alden outside Askvoll after having suffered a power failure and losing all engine power. The ship was only 250 meters from the shore when the crew was able to drop the anchor. Two Norwegian frigates, the "Thor Heyerdahl" and "Helge Ingstad," enroute to Håkonsvern, were only half an hour away and immediately proceeded towards the distressed research vessel.
