No let-up for Panama canal dredgers
Dredging activity is not going to stop in Panama Canal waters once the first neo-Panamax transits the waterway via the new third lane in June. “We still have a lot to do,” acknowledged Panama Canal Authority (ACP) dredging division head Rolando Gordon during an interview with IHS DPC in March. The dredging of the Panama Canal’s Pacific entrance – a project that is not a part of the canal expansion programme – is expected to be completed in June 2017. That contract, which was awarded to Dredging International in November 2015, involves widening the channel to 300 m, up from 192 m currently, and removing over five million m3 of mostly soft material. Dredging International previously conducted work on deepening and widening the channel at the Pacific canal entrance in 2009-2012.
