Too late to act against Russian ship with stolen wheat

Apr 17, 2026 11:56

Israel has told Ukraine that it was too late to act against the 'Abinsk', accused of carrying stolen Ukrainian grain, as the ship has already departed Haifa Port. The Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar sent a message to his Ukrainian counterpart saying the vessel could no longer be detained. It had sailed from Haifa on April 15, enroute to the Dardanelles with an ETA as of April 18. Ravid said Israel had been aware of it two weeks before it arrived. The development came after Ukraine on April 14 accused Israel of allowing the Russian ship, allegedly loaded with grain taken from Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory, to dock in Haifa. Kyiv had urged Israel to block the vessel before it docked, with Ukrainian Ambassador Yevgen Korniychuk raising the issue with Israeli officials and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha discussing it directly with Sa’ar.

Ukraine urged Israel to detain freighter with stolen wheat

Apr 15, 2026 12:53

Ukraine has called on Israel to detain the 'Abinsk', suspected of transporting grain taken from temporary occupied Ukrainian territory, escalating diplomatic tensions over alleged wartime looting. The vessel was carrying 43,765.18 tonnes of wheat believed to have originated in Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha raised the issue directly with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, warning that the ship, which has docked at the Port of Haifa, was part of Russia’s broader war effort. Sybiha called the export of stolen agricultural products illegal and urged Israel not to allow such shipments to proceed. The request followed previous Ukrainian diplomatic discussions, including appeals from Ukraine’s ambassador in Israel and legal authorities in Kyiv, urging Israeli officials to block the vessel’s operations.
