Russian forces struck two cargo ships on Jan 9, 2026, killing one seafarer and injuring a second crew member. The 'Wael K' was struck on its way to the port of Chornomorsk to koad a cargo of grain. The ship was underway in the Ukrainian Sea Corridor when it was struck in its upperworks by a Russian drone. The vessel’s second mate, a Syrian national, was injured and received medical attention. The ship was able to continue under its own power and was reported to be heading to the nearest port. A second vessel, the bulk carrier 'Ladonna', was also hit while docked in the Great Odesa port complex and loading soybeans. Oleksiy Kuleba, announced that one crew member, a Syrian citizen, had died as a result of the attack. He called it a war crime. The swift incoming high tide plus the pulling power of three TNPA tugs prevented a serious situation in the port of Richards Bay on Aug 25, 2017, after the "Beaumont" ran aground. She had left its berth at the Richards Bay Coal Terminal shortly after 3 p.m. after completing her cargo loading, assisted by two tugs. It turned into the main channel and just kept on turning. The tugs had already left her side and were heading back to the Small Craft Harbour. The ship was firmly grounded on the sandbank, and after a 30-minute attempt to pull her off, a third tug assisted and the vessel was pulled free. There were no apparent signs of damage or a pollution threat, and she was towed back to RBCT for inspection by surveyors. Two more bulk carriers were arrested in Singapore on Sunday, according to the latest records from the Supreme Court of Singapore. Data from VesselsValue.com indicates that Dong Won Shipping's South Korean flagged Ocean Star, and Archipelago Shipping's Greece-flagged Archimedes, were the fourth and fifth bulk carriers respectively to be arrested in the city state this month. The 22,100 dwt, 1995-built Handy Ocean Star was arrested on instruction from local law firm Oon & Bazul LLP at 2:08pm local time. The 2011-built, 81,100 dwt Panamax Archimedes was subsequently arrested at 7:15pm local time, following instruction from Asia Practice LLP.
