Janas

The ' Janas' will be renamed 'GNV Altair'. The ferry was purchased by GNV in December 2025 at an auction, along with its sister ships 'Athara' and the 'Moby Ale Due'. The 'GNV Altair' will enter service on connections to Algeria starting on Feb 21, 2026, with two weekly rotations: one to Bejaia and one to Algiers. The ship berthed in the port of La Spezia on Jan 14. Before entering service, the 'GNV Altair' will undergo specific refitting interventions aimed at aligning the vessel with GNV's quality and operational standards, with particular attention to improving the passenger travel experience and the overall efficiency of the ships.

Under the orders of the Court of Milan, the 'Moby Aki' (IMO: 9299393), 'Moby Wonder' (IMO: 9214367), 'Moby Ale Due' (IMO: 9222522), 'Athara' (IMO: 9263655) and the 'Janas' were due to be sold at auction next week with a starting price of €229.9 million for the single lot. The 'Moby Aki' and the 'Moby Wonder' must be chartered back to Moby for a period of 15 years at a daily rate of €15,000 ($17,200) per day. Tihs came a few days after the Italian Competition and Market Authority (AGCM) ruled the Mediterranean Shipping Co’s stake in the operator could erode competition. MSC sold its stake in the Italian ferry operator after that. The MSC subsidiary Shipping Agencies Services bought the minority stake in Moby, which runs ferry services between the Italian mainland and the islands of Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica, back in 2022 when the operator was facing insolvency. But the AGCM opened an investigation in Nov 2024 due to competition concerns, as SAS also owns Grandi Navi Veloci, which competes on some routes with Moby. A link between Grandi Navi Veloci (also owned by MSC subsidiary SAS) which might lead to a deterioration in competition on routes where GNV and Moby were competing. The SAS will therefore sell its 49% stake back to the original owner Onorato Armatori in a deal accepted by the competition authority.

The "Janas" allided with a moored cargo ship in the port of Livorno on Nov 4, 2017. The ship was about to exit port, bound to Olbia, when the accident happened at 9.30 p.m. The ferry with 456 passengers on board had to return to port for investigations ,There were no injuries, and the ferry finally departed from Livorno on Nov 5 at 3 a.m.

63 immigrants who were boarded on the "Janas" for deportation from Italy rioted and went on rampage during her voyage from Cagliari to Naples in the evening of Feb 20, 2017. They devastated a number of cabins, threatening part of the 200 other passengers. One mobile phone was robbed, some passengers suffered physical violence. People locked themselves in cabins, while migrants were trying to break in. The police was informed, and upon the arrival of the ferry at Naples the migrants were arrested. The ferry underwent a thorough search for those who may hide inside the vessel’s compartments. Om Feb 21 at 7.20 p.m. the ship left Naples to Cagliari. Several of the protagonists of the raids were part of a group of 112 Algerians who had landed in recent days on the coast south of Sardinia. The 63 rioting migrants have been detained and are awaiting decision. Among them 29 were under an expulsion order, 32 were legal immigrants while two were not in possession of personal documents. The latter were taken to police headquarters where they will be identified in order to verify their state of regularity.
