Fire on bulk carrier in Newcastle
In the evening of Dec 15, 2019, a fire broke out in a storage compartment with food and other items inside the superstructure of the 'Ecomar G.O.' at the Kooragang Coal Terminal in Newcastle, Australia. The bulk carrier, coming from Rizhao, had arrived in port at 5.10 a.m. to load a cargo of coal. The crew attempted to extinguish the fire but was unsuccessful due to its intensity. The NSW Fire and Rescue arrived on scene at 8 p.m. The emergency response included NSW Fire and Rescue and NSW Ambulance, Port Waratah Coal Services and the Port Authority. The fire was extinguished at 9.30 p.m. Three crew were treated for smoke inhalation by NSW ambulance paramedics who assessed all 22 crew members. The cause of the fire was unknown.
