First container ship sailing through Arctic arrived in Hamburg

Oct 16, 2025 11:54

On Oct 15, 2025, the 'Istanbul Bridge', beng the first container ship sailing through the Arctic, arrived in the Port of Hamburg. The ship had taken the northern sea route around Russia to Europe, having departed from Ningbo on Sep 22, and then headed north on its way to Europe. The ship completed the Northeast Passage between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans in just 20 days. Container ships normally travel through the Suez Canal โ€“ or, due to the current security situation, often around the southern tip of Africa. This takes about twice as long as the northern sea route and more than half as long. Container ship ran aground off Bronka

Feb 05, 2024 23:05

The 'Flying Fish 1' ran aground with its stern in the St. Petersburg port of Bronka, on Feb 3, 2024, at 7.145 a.m. UTC, carrying more than 2300 containers. While heading to the berth and, after turning, it got stuckwith its stern in pos. 59 57 53N, 029 44 50E, about 1.9 nautical miles from Kronshtadt. The ship blocked traffic on the approach channel of the multifunctional marine transshipment complex (MMTC) "Bronka". The salvage operation was successfully completed on Feb 4 at 6 p.m. Moscow time. Specialists of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Marine Rescue Service" developed, coordinated, and carried out the operation to refloat the vessel. In difficult ice conditions, the divers inspected the rudder propeller group and the underwater part of the hull of the vessel. Hydrographers measured the depths with a side-scan sonar. As a result, an accurate depth chart was developed, the necessary total pulling force was calculated, and the right decision was made on the direction of pulling the vessel afloat and on the arrangement of vessels involved in the refloating of the fcontainership. The tugs 'Lukman', 'Tornado', 'Typhoon' (s/v Baltic Fleet), the icebreaker 'Murmansk' (s/v Rosmorport) and the diving vessel 'Vodolaz Chebanenko' of the Baltic branch of the FSBI "Marine Rescue Service" with a diving station were involved in the work. The operation to refloat the vessel with a draft of more than 11.5 metres lasted almost 40 hours. The ship, accompanied by tugs, moved to the berth of the Multipurpose Sea Cargo Complex Bronka.
