Allision in Naples being investigated

Apr 22, 2024 12:00

The allision of the 'Isola di Procida' with the Beverello Jetty in Naples on April 19 at around 10.15 a.m. was being investigated by the Coast Guard, while the ship remained stationary in port as of April 22. A gust of wind or a technical accident were the first hypotheses. The ship had on board 163 passengers, including many foreign tourists. On board were also some members of the police force, who were on Capri on surveillance duty on the last day of the G7. Almost all the passengers were already standing and ready to disembark when the ferry crashed into the quay, with the result that many fell, some even down the stairs, ending up on the landing and suffering various injuries. 21 people were transported to the city's hospitals with maxillofacial trauma or injuries, eight more reached the emergency room by their own means. Almost all injuries were considered minor, but a 51-year-old man was in serious condition. 118 health workers, personnel from the Port Authority and the State Police were mobilized. The ship had suffered damage to the port side stern.
