Medevac near Farewell Spit
A Ukrainian crew member of the "Irvinga" has been winched off the fishing vessel near Farewell Spit at the top of the South Island on Mar 11, 2014. The "Irvinga" was 40 nautical miles off the coast when the Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter received an emergency call. The man was suffering abdominal pains and an intensive care paramedic was winched onto the vessel before both were lifted off. The man was flown to Nelson Hospital in a stable condition for further assessment.
