Beaches being littered with debris weeks after container loss
While the 'Ionikos' remained stationary in the port of Casablanca as of March 9, the container loss on Feb 25 continued to have repercussions, extending far beyond the resumption of maritime traffic after a two-day suspension. On the early afternoon of March 7, the beach at Aïn Diab and the surrounding waters were littered with debris, pieces of packaging, and various products, remnants of the containers that had fallen into the sea. Dead seagulls were lying on the shore, apparent victims of the toxicity of the spilled cargo. A full mobilisation had been underway since the first cargoes appeared. Every day, on the morning and the evening, the sea washed up waste from the lost containers. Waste collection workers were working daily to clean the affected areas, particularly the Aïn Diab beach, where the cleanup operations continued relentlessly. Cleanup operations also continued in other coastal areas, particularly around the Hassan II Mosque. Regarding the contents of the containers, the exact nature of leaked substances or their toxicity was not yet known. To date, the National Ports Agency (ANP), the supervisory authority for the port of Casablanca, has released no information about the incident, neither during the port closure nor since the resumption of traffic. The nature and composition of the goods transported in the sunken containers remained unknown, leaving doubts as to the true extent of the environmental risk. Casablanca port re-opened after container loss
The stranding of dozens of containers on Feb 28, resulted from the loss of 86 containers by the 'Ionikos' during the departure from the port of Casablanca, when it encountered heavy swells, making the departure maneuver difficult. The challenging weather conditions prompted the port authority to order the ship to put out to sea, leading to the significant loss. Following this, the port of Casablanca, a crucial hub for maritime trade, was closed until further notice by the National Ports Agency (ANP) to ensure navigational safety and mitigate the risks associated with drifting containers. The temporary closure posed serious economic challenges and directly affected the businesses that depended on the smooth operation of this key infrastructure. A high-level committee was established to monitor the movement of the floating containers. The operations involved locating the containers and escorting them until they were removed from the water. Before normal port operations could resume, the port authority verified that no lost containers were obstructing the access channel. The first departure of a vessel, carried out under conditions deemed satisfactory, marked the beginning of a gradual return to normal. The port reopened on Feb 27.
Loss of 85 containers off Casablanca
The 'Ionikos' has lostt 85 containers overboard off Casablanca. The ship had left the port on Feb 25, 2026, at around 11:45 p.m. after unloading cargo from China, enroute to Spain. Upon reaching open water beyond the port entrance, the ship was hit by relatively high waves, causing it to roll and shift its cargo. As a result of these movements, several containers fell into the sea very close to the port entrance. n the first few hours afterward, port authorities had not yet assessed the extent of the damage. It was only the following morning that members of the Royal Gendarmerie spotted containers scattered near the port entrance. Faced with this situation, a large-scale security and recovery operation was launched. A Royal Gendarmerie helicopter was deployed to monitor the area, supported by five vessels from the Royal Maritime Gendarmerie and the Royal Navy, as well as several tugs. As a precautionary measure, the authorities have temporarily suspended maritime traffic at the port of Casablanca. The lost containers were loaded with a variety of goods, ranging from automotive parts to furniture, as well as other consumer goods. While no major pollution has been reported, the diversity of the products involved necessitates heightened vigilance, both for maritime safety and for the protection of the coastal ecosystem. As a safety measure, maritime traffic in the port of Casablanca was temporarily suspended while navigational risks were assessed and the recovery operations were organised. In a notice sent to its partners, the shipping company Soline indicated that the measure took effect in accordance with a decision by the port authorities, until further notice. The 'Ionikos' was moored about six nautical miles from the port in pos. 33° 48' N 007° 40' W. On March 1, ist entered the port of Casablanca, where it remained stationary as of March 3.
