Amades

The tug 'Astana' (IMO: 9414204) sank on March 18, 2026, at 8.40 a.m. in the port of Midia in the Dana 1 area. It capsized while providing assistance to the 'Amades', in order to moor it at the Monbuoy terminal, located approximately eight kilometres from the Port of Midia. Three Saj B crews, one mobile intensive care crew, helicopter, a SMURD B crew and a fire engine responded. Two boats from ARVOM with four divers are performing search and rescue missions offshore. On the way to the scenewas another ARSVOM boat on which were 10 divers, four military from the ISU and six utility divers also from ARSVOM. They were assisted by Midia Marine Terminal divers. One person was pulled out of the water by the crew of the tug 'București' and handed over to the specialised medical crews in the port. He was brought to the dock, and resuscitation maneuvers were performed, but the victim was declared deceased. Four other people on board may have also perished,, with SAR operations currently ongoing. The incident occurred during assistance maneuvers for a tanker at the offshore Midia Marine Terminal. The tug first had reported an engine failure, subsequently capsizing to starboard. It turned upside down and then sank stern first. The authorities will investigate all factors that led to the accident, under the coordination of the Prosecutor's Office. The ISU 'Dobrogea' Constanța and ARSVOM were in direct contact with the owner company. The unloading maneuvers of the tanker at the terminal have been safely stopped, with no additional risks. The 'Agios Gerasimos', 'King Philippos' and 'Nissos Antimilos' are going on detours of thousands of miles to deliver crude from Russia’s Baltic Sea to customers in Asia., all sailing around Africa, likely en route for India.. A fourth, the 'Amades' may be following in their wake. The reasons for unusually long voyages are not known but many shipowners, including European ones, have avoided the Red Sea because of the threat of Houthi attacks on merchant vessels.
