Unsafe cargo forced ship to stop in Kiel
When passing the locks of the Kiel Canal in Kiel on Nov 14, 2013, around 11 a.m., the unsafe stowage of birch logs on deck of the "Hagland Chief" was remarked by the personell and officials called for an inspection. The ship was ordered to dock at the Voith Quay in the North port of Kiel where it berthed at 1.50 p.m. where the cargo was being controlled. It was found out that some of the logs had already shifted, and possibly more lost over board during the voyage, so the logs which were held by simple steel frames but were not secured otherwise had to be properly stowed again in Kiel. The vessel had been underway from Skulde to Oostende. This happened just a few days after the cargo vessel "Roseburg" lost 1500 tons of timber off Kiel which are still covering beaches at Falckenstein and Friedrichsort.
