Grounding at Svinesund Bridge
The "Hagland Captain" enroute from Porsgrunn to Halden with a cargo of timber and 85 tons diesel and three tons lubricants on board, has run aground in dense fog under the news Svinesund Bridge in pos. 59° 06' N 011° 15' E on Oct 16, 2025. just after 1 a.m. on the Swedish side of the construction. The Swedish Coast Guard was notified at 1.30 a.m. No damage, no pollution and no water ingress were reported. A tug was contacted by the VTS and arrived on scene at 3:30 a.m. along with the patrol boats 'KBV 310' (MMSI: 265400000) from the Swedish Coast Guard, which has started an investigation and questioned the crew. A breathalyzer test has been taken of the crew, which has not yielded any results, The rescue service in Strömstad and the Norwegian authorities were notified of the incident. The Norwegian Environmental Emergency Response Team were ready if there had been a discharge of pollutants. On the morning, divers from the Coast Guard inspected the vessel's hull to identify anyx damage and how the vessel was grounded. They could not find anything that could have hindered a towing operation. The Coast Guard asked the SSRS to assist in transporting environmental rescue equipment to the scene. The Swedish Transport Agency and the rescue service in Strömstad municipality were informed of the incident After an initial assessment, it was decided to wait until the high tide before starting to pull the ship off, the peak of which was expected at 3 p.m. The tugs 'Bob' (IMO: 9875915) and 'Bebe' (IMO: 6423890) were deployed for the recovery. They started the operation at 1 p.m., and at 2.50 p.m. the ship was refloated and towed along the Ringdals Fjord to Halden, escorted by the patrol vessel 'KBV 032' (IMO: 9536583), which had been deployed from Lysekil, and where it was safely berthed on the afternoon. It left the port again on Oct 17 and proceeded to Haugesund, where it arrived at the Stocznia Westcon Shipyard on Oct 18 and remained stationary as of Oct 20. A preliminary investigation into negligence in maritime traffic was ongoing. The Coast Guard had a good understanding of the course of events. The 'Hagland Captain' had already got in distress on March 23, 2019, after its engine stalled in a violent storm at Hustadvika in Møre og Romsdal. The ship was also loaded with timber and lost power due to a breaking sea hitting the stern. The crew had to jump into the sea. They were picked up by helicopter. Disabled cargo vessel towed to Averøy
In the morning of March 25 the "Hagland Captain" was under tow to Averøy in the morning after the anchor chains were cut following weather improvement. It was being pulled by the offshore tug "Boa Balder" (IMO: 9462342) and escorted by the patrol boat "Harstad" (IMO: 9312107) of the Norwegian Coastguard. The vessel berthed at hte industrial park in Kjerkevågen/Averøy at 3.30 p.m. On March 26, the class company DNVGL boarded the ship for investigations. According to what the Norwegian Maritime Directorate knows so far, the vessel did not touch bottom. It was found out that a breaking wave caused water to came into an air intake that sprayed up and hit an electric panel. This led to a short circuit which put the diesel out of order. The surveillance aircraft LN-KYV was sent to the area at Trondheimsleia where the cargo loss of about 300 logs had occurred. No observations were made. Cargo ship in distress
The "Hagland Captain" sent a mayday near Hustadvika off the Romsdal coast. Two rescue helicopters were on their way to thevessel on March 23, 2019, at 7.40 p.m. to assist the casualty. It was considered to evacuate the nine crew members on board. The cargo ship was fighting the big waves in the area. As the wind was turning west in the area tonight this could lead to greater problems for the ship. The "Hagland Captain" had suffered an eingine failure at 7 p.m. and lost part of the timber load overboard. The ship had sailed from Karlskrona on March 15 bound to Skogn. The crew finally had to jump into the sea to be rescued by helicopters deployed from the SAR mission at the cruise shp "Viking Sky". All were recovered and flown to shore. Wärtsilä to deliver world’s first hybrid retrofit for short-sea shipping vessel
The technology group Wärtsilä has signed an agreement with the international shipping company Hagland Shipping AS for a hybrid retrofit installation, the company said in its release. The project will take place onboard the ‘Hagland Captain’, a general cargo vessel owned by Hagland Shipping. It will be the first project of its kind ever in short-sea shipping applications. The agreement was signed in December 2018.
