Passenger fell from Hideaway Pool into pool gutter - stabed crew member meanwhile recovering ashore
On July 27 a passenger of the 'Icon of the Seas' accidentally fell from the Hideaway Pool on Deck 15 into the pool gutter while attempting to retrieve his sunglasses. The crew responded immediately. Fortunately, the guest was not injured. A second safety railing at the outer edge of the pool prevented a more serious oucome. Below the pool is a narrow maintenance corridor, secured by an additional glass barrier. The man hit this barrier and merely fell into the gap – he remained on Deck 15, albeit in an area not normally accessible to the public. Meanwhile the South African female crew member, who was stabbed multiple times by a 35-year-old South African man on July 24 off the coast of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas, was recovering at a Miami hospital and in a stable condition. Following the incident, which was a personal dispute, the man then fled the scene and jumped off the ship, being later found deadin the sea. The cruise operator Royal Caribbean confirmed the incident and has pledged its full cooperation with the Bahamian authorities.
Crew member stabbed colleague, jumped over board and died
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF), the unidentified male crew member who died after going overnoard, allegedly stabbed a female co-worker during a dispute. “Shortly before 7:30 p.m., a 28-year-old South African female crew member was allegedly stabbed multiple times by another crew member, a 35-year-old South African male. Following the incident, the male reportedly fled from the scene and jumped into the water. He was retrieved unresponsive and pronounced dead by onboard medical staff. Despite immediately launching a search and rescue mission and finding the crew member in less than an hour, he could not be saved. His alleged victim, despite receiving multiple stab wounds to her upper body, was in stable condition after being attended to by the onboard medical team. An investigation into the attack was underway, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the deceased crew member’s exact cause of death. Despite the circumstances, the up to 5,610 passengers onboard the world’s largest cruise ship were not in any danger. This was not a random attack, but rather the assault appears to be the result of a disagreement between two crew members. As the 'Icon of the Seas' only had to briefly backtrack to recover the crew member’s body, there was no significant impact to the itinerary.
Crew member fell over board and died
A crew member of the 'Icon of the Seas' has died after going overboard. A man overboard call went off aboard the ship on July 25, 2025, at around 7:00 p.m., a few hundred miles off the coast of the Bahamas. Crews deployed rescue efforts. The crew member was located and pulled onto a dinghy; however, he passed away.
Itinerary changed due to hurricane Milton
The 'Icon of the Seas' had skip a visit to Royal Caribbean's private island on Oct 11, and instead stay out to sea due to the hurricane Miltlon. The ship stayed docked in port longer in St. Thomas and St. Kitts until sunset.
Cruise cancelled for unscheduled repairs
The US shipping company Royal Caribbean International had to cancel a cruise of the 'Icon of the Seas', which was due to start on Sep 28, at short notice. The reason for this were unscheduled repairs. Problems had already occurred on the current cruise because the ship was not reaching full cruising speed. Work was being done to resolve the technical problems on board the ship and expected to be completed next week, which is why the one-week Caribbean cruise from Sep 28 to Oct 5 was cancelled. The company will refund all services already booked and compensate guests with a travel credit in the amount of the cruise cost for a future trip with the shipping company. On the current cruise, the call at the port of Charlotte Amalie on the island of St. Thomas had to be canceled due to the technical problems on board. The voyage had started in Miami en route to Philipsburg on St. Maarten and was continued with two more days at sea via Royal Caribbean's private island Perfect Day at Coco Cay in the Bahamas back to Miami, where the ship will then stop operations on Sep 28 in order to carry out the necessary repairs.
Man who jumped over board fell 90 feet deep
The passenger who jumped from the running track on the fifth deck of the 'Icon of the Seas' on May 26, fell 90 feet to his death. Each deck is about 20 feet high. He was likely dead when he was recovered from the water. The doctor on board pronounced him dead once his body was transported to the medical bay. The passenger’s body was then stored in the on-board morgue, which is equipped with eight drawers. The body was removed from the ship after it docked on the morning of June 1. The man’s body was transported via van to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner’s Office. The police met the ship and took statements at the docks, and retrieved a copy of the surveillance footage of the fatal incident. The overboard detection system was activated almost immediately, prompting onboard staff into action. The protocol was to immediately make visual contact. One guard also saw the man jump on a security camera feed. The captain stopped and turned the ship around. Once the alert was sounded, the ship’s specialized security team prepared to take a rescue boat out to pick up the man. The rest of the security team was stationed at predetermined lookout spots to do a 360-degree scan of the surrounding waters, while the Coast Guard was also briefed and immediately sent out an aircraft to the site. While the potential rescue got underway, the vessel's medical team was put on high alert. The ship had paramedics, nurses, former ER doctors, and even a surgeon on board – as well as all the lifesaving medical equipment. The man was likely not alive when he was recovered from the water.
