Al-Salmi

The 'Al Salmi', with 24 crew members on board and fully loaden with approximately 1.2 million barrels of Saudi- as well as 800,000 barrels of Kuwaiti crude oil, destined to Qingdao, was struck at starboard side by an unknown projectile about 31 nautical miles northwest of Dubai at Anchorage E in pos. 25° 31' N 054° 52' E, late on March 30, 2026. The drone triggered a fire on board. Maritime firefighting units worked through the night to extinguish the blaze, which could fully contained, with no oil leakages reported, in the morning of March 31. The emergency teams which had responded to the incident, confirmed that all crew members of the ship, which was being operated by the Kuwait Petroleum Corp (KPC), were safe and sound. There was no information if they were still on board the tanker. The incident resulted in a significant damage to the vessel's hull. The technical assessments and investigations were ongoing in the foremidday of March 31, with all necessary measures being taken to safeguard the damaged vessel. The Iran was thought to have been behind the attack. In a separate warning issued hours earlier, the UKMTO had reported that the container ship 'Express Rome' (IMO: 9484936) had remarked two projectiles splashing nearby within a one-hour period northeast of Ras Tanura. No injuries or environmental damage were reported in either case. The attacks were the first confirmed incidents in the region since March 22. On July 6, 2025, at 10.12 p.m., the 'Al Salmi' was boarded by three perpetraotrs in pos. 1° 3.77' N 103° 37.33 E. while underway in the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme of the Singapore Strait. No injuries were reported, and nothing was reported stolen.

The "Al Salmi" assisted Italian authorities in a massive ongoing effort to rescue a group of refugees off the coasts of Italy after it received an urgent distress call from the Italian Coastguard regarding illegal immigrants whose boats had capsized. The crew immediately contacted the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), which authorised the go ahead for a rescue operation. The vessel saved 225 people who were dropped off at Augusta on June 16, 2014. Most of the rescued were women and children, one of whom was dead, others requiring critical medical attention. The rescue efforts were continue as the total number of those stranded iwas s estimated at 624.
