GOLDEN GATE 9183207

With all the well-deserved fuss last week over Bike to Work Day—is time to inaugurate a Ferry to Work Day? The Golden Gate Ferry is making a case for it with today's launch of the M.V. Golden Gate, a newly refurbished high-speed catamaran purchased two years ago by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. The Golden Gate, bought by the district in 2009 from the Washington State Ferry, began service today on the Larkspur-San Francisco route, according to the district. The vessel, along with the M.V. Napa which began ferry Marin residents between Larkspur and the city in 2009, were purchased for $4 million from a combination of federal, state and GGBHTD funds that have allotted $10 million to refurbish each vessel. The district says a new high-speed ferry currently goes for about $20 million.
