On November 8, 2016, the bulk carrier 'King Sugar', which had set sail from Rotterdam on November 1, encountered an unexpected engine failure while navigating the Kalmar Strait off the coast of Oskarshamn. Following this breakdown, the vessel was forced to anchor temporarily near the port. Fortunately, after a period of downtime, the main engine was successfully restarted, allowing the 'King Sugar' to resume its course towards the port, where it arrived at noon on November 9. In response to the incident, local authorities mandated a thorough safety inspection of the ship upon its docking.

In a somber incident, two decomposing bodies, believed to be stowaways, were discovered aboard the vessel King Sugar in Durban harbour on June 22, 2014. The grim find was made by the ship's engineer while inspecting a stairway leading to one of the hatches shortly after the ship docked at Maydon Wharf. The identities of the deceased remain unknown, and the cause of death is currently undetermined. The King Sugar had embarked from San Lorenzo on May 28 and made a stop in Cape Town from June 13 to June 16.
