Tanker disabled off Dutch coast

Oct 06, 2025 09:54

On Oct 4, 2025, the 'Eva Schulte', owned by the Hamburg-based shipping company Bernhard Schulte, drifted unmaneuverable near the Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm, 37 kilometres west of Ijmuiden, off the Dutch coast after an engine failure with 21 crew members and a cargo of fuel oil on board, enroute from Brofjorden to Amsterdam The Dutch Coast Guard responded immediately. Two lifeboats from the KNRM Ijmuiden and Scheveningen as well as two Coastguard helicopters were mobilized too. After about one hour of sailing, the lifeboat from IJmuiden returned to the port. Shortly thereafter, the KNRM Scheveningen lifeboat arrived on the scene and successfully assisted in establishing a towing connection between the emergency tug 'Multraship Protector' (IMO: 9344978), which was already near the wind farm as a precautionary measure, and had also quickly arrived on the scene. Initially, the crew of the 'Eva Schulte' had attempted to drop the anchor to stop the drift. Due to the storm and waves up to five meters high, this was unsuccessful. The crew of the 'Multraship Protector' attempted to establish a tow connection at 10.30 p.m. The operating conditions were described as extremely difficult. With the assistance of the lifeboat "Kitty Roosmale Nepveu," a tow wire was securely attached at 11.15 p.m. The first priority was to pull the tanker away from the wind farm. A t around midnight, the tanker was towed to a safe position. The situation was described as stable during the night. The tanker's crew managed to repair the defect in the main engine. The Coastguard was assessing whether the ship could continue under its own power or whether it needed to be towed to a port. Due to the poor weather conditions, it was not safe to drop the tow connection. As soon as the weather has improved, the tanker may continue its journey under its own power. As of Oct 6, it remained stationary in pos. 52° 20.33' N 003° 34.51' E. Report with photo: https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2025/10/04/olietanker-op-drift-voor-nederlandse-kust/

Sailboat Crew rescued after hitting container off Maputo

Nov 04, 2011 08:08

Five sailors are lucky to be alive after their yacht struck a container and sank off Maputo yesterday. The crew drifted in their life raft for more than seven hours before being rescued by a tanker, and are now on board the vessel en route to Singapore. Skipper Gerrie Boshoff, of Vanderbijlpark, and the crew were sailing from Reunion to Durban when their vessel, The Wizard, struck the container in the morning. With the vessel taking on water, the crew sent a distress signal at 4.30am, which was received by the SA Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre. The centre’s rescue mission co-ordinator, Mark Steed, said that attempts to contact The Wizard were unsuccessful. “A second beacon detection from the vessel was received and a safety net broadcast to vessels in the area was put out, asking all vessels to respond and assist.” Steed said the EVA Schulte and Voge Felix, both six hours away, responded and were instructed to divert to The Wizard’s position. He said the vessels reached the distress point at 1pm, by when The Wizard had already sunk. The Eva Schulte crew found the raft with all five crew and took them aboard. With the Singapore-registered tanker bound for Singapore, The Wizard’s crew would go along for the ride before flying back to South Africa. http://www.iol.co.za/mercury/crew-rescued-after-hitting-container-1.1171484
