Fire in Green Bay

Nov 25, 2020 09:42

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department was dispatched to a fire aboard the 'G.L. Ostrander' in the port in the morning of Nov 23, 2020. A generator had caught fire aboard the tug/barge which was berthed at the LaFarge dock off the 9th Street shortly before 6 a.m. The ship’s crew managed to put the fire out before the firefighters were on the scene. The firefighters helped with ventilating the smoke and made sure the fire had not extended anywhere else, confirming the fire was confined to the generator room at the port bow. No one was hurt. The Green Bay Metro Fire Department was investigating what caused the generator to catch fire. The U.S. Coast Guard and Port of Green Bay authorities were notified about the fire. The ship was in port to unload a cargo of cement into the storage vessel 'S.T. Crapo' after its arrival from Chicago the same day.

Pusher tug collided with ferry

On June 12, 2014, the passenger ferry "Kristen D" enroute to Bois Blanc Island, traveling east toward the island, collided with the pusher tug "G.L. Ostrander", which was heading south toward Alpena shortly after 8:30 a.m. on the Lake Huron during a period of low visibility. The "Kirsten" D suffered minor damage to an approximately 10-foot piece of the rub rail. The "G.L. Ostrander" suffered a small dent on the forward port side. None of the eight persons aboard the ferry, among them three crew and five passengers, which was on the regular morning trip to the island, were hurt. The US Coast Guard cleared the ferry to resume operations later in the afternoon. The "G.L. Ostrander" was pushing the 441-foot freight barge "Integrity", making the two vessels one at 577-feet length. The incident was still being analyzed as part of a USCG Marine Casualty investigation which could take up to 90 days before a final report will be issued.
