Bulk carrier released and crew exchanged
The 'Alpha Bravery' has been released following the advice of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). The bulk carrier was officially authorized to leave Mauritian territorial waters on Nov 13. However, the ship's release was accompanied by a significant logistical and security operation involving a complete crew change. While the vessel was detained, the authorities carried out a complete change of personnel on board. 23 new crew members boarded the 'Alpha Bravery', replacing the original twenty-four crew members who disembarked. These crew members were immediately taken into care and escorted to a hotel, where they are currently being housed. The investigation surrounding the seizure of 400 kg of cocaine on board the ship was still ongoing. The ship was closely monitored until it was out of range on its way to Singapore with an ETA as of Nov 27. 450 kg of cocaine seized off Port Louis
Aboard the 'Alpha Bravery', 450 kg of cocaine worth Rs 6 billion were seized, after the ship was intercepted by MARCOSS and other units of the Mauritian police off the coast of Mauritius on Nov 7, en route from Itaqui to Singapore. The drugs were distributed in 15 bags of 30 kg each. While the ship was in Mauritian territorial waters, the captain, Emmanuil Drossos, alerted a maritime agency based in Port Louis after his crew made a striking discovery. The Mauritian police were immediately notified. The source of the alert was attributed to the ship's Chief Engineer, Razil Oliveros, a Greek national. During a routine inspection on Nov 7, he noticed that access to the engine room had clearly been tampered with. After informing Captain Drossos, the latter ordered a thorough search of the premises. It was during this search that the discovery was made in the ship's coffer dam. Preliminary field tests quickly confirmed that the powder was cocaine. In addition to the drugs, about 50 fishing net lights and their activation batteries were seized. Detectives from the anti-drug squad (ADSU) suspected that these lights were intended to be attached to the packages before they were thrown overboard, to facilitate their retrieval by accomplices. As soon as the alert was raised, a coordinated operation was launched. On Nov 8, six naval commandos (MARCOS), supported by the Helicopter Squadron, were deployed around 2:00 p.m. to the ship's position 24 nautical miles offshore to take control of the vessel. On Nov 9, teams from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS), the Maritime Intelligence Cell (MIC), and the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) boarded the vessel. Approximately two nautical miles from the port, around 9:00 a.m., the Mauritian police officially took possession of the drugs. The captain facilitated access by welcoming the officers and leading them to the exact location of the illicit cargo, situated in the engine room, a remote area with two access points. Access to this room had been sealed on the captain's orders from the moment of discovery until the arrival of the Mauritian authorities. After being secured and checked by law enforcement, the 'Alpha Bravery' was escorted to the port of ββPort Louis. Several officials from various security and anti-narcotics units were present at the scene, including DCP Rassen, head of the ADSU (Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit), the NCG (National Combat Group) commander, Captain Binoop, as well as several high-ranking police officers and members of the Port's DCIU (Directorate of Internal Security and Urban Cooperation). The search operation began on the afternoon. The 15 bags of cocaine were unloaded under armed escort by commandos and ADSU personnel. The packages were immediately loaded onto two armored vehicles belonging to the Special Mobile Force (SMF) for immediate transport to ADSU headquarters at the Central Barracks.
