Aboard the 'Nordic Barents' there was an alert in the port of Constantza on Nov 20, 2019, at 03.10 a.m., when six Algerian refugees, who were earlier found on board the bulk carrier by Romanian border guards, had disappeared from a locked cabin, where they were being held. Immediately, border guards checked the vessel, alerted local authorities and the security firms within the port. When checking the vessel, the border guards discovered that the refugees had set fire to the locked cabin where they were being held and had escaped, probably down mooring ropes. The last check of the refugees in the cabin had been made at 02.30 a.m. when no irregularities had been found by the border guards. The alarm was sounded, and the missing refugees were searched for with the help of the Police and the Gendarmerie. Five of the fugitive refugees were found 15 kilometres from Constantza, in the field, near Murfatlar and detained in the station area of Târgu Jiu in the evening of Nov 21, at 7.30 p.m. . The search continued for the sixth Algerian refugee. Following a medical examination, the five refugees were found to be in need of medical care for smoke inhalation, after being poisoned by the smoke from a burning mattress in the cabin. The refugees were brought back on board by a Coast Guard team. The Boarder police, under the coordination of the case prosecutor within the Prosecutor's Office of Constanța County, continue the investigations in terms regarding the crime of fraudulent crossing of the state boarder.

On March 15, 2017, the "Nordic Barents" was in collision with the nuclear icebreaker "Vaygach" while under ice escort in the Kara Sea. The freighter’s bow struck the icebreaker’s wooden fender. The icebreaker did not suffer damages, while the bulk carrier sustained a hull dent without breaches. The convoy kept navigating through the ice. The Nordic Barents" was en route from Port Dickson to Murmansk.

For the first time ever, with the "Nordic Barents", a bulk carrier with non-Russian flag will be using the Northern Sea Route as a transit trade lane, when transporting iron ore from the Northern Norway to China via Arctic and Russian waters. The vessel departs from the port of Kirkenes in the next weeks. The 41000 tons iron ore concentrate will be carried from Kirkenes to China via the Arctic. Russian authorities, the Northern Sea Route Administration under the Ministry of Transportation and Rosatomflot, the operator of the Russian national icebreaking fleet, have given the project their first-ever approval for a foreign flagged vessel to ship a cargo in transit from a foreign port to a foreign port through Russian waters.
