Engine room fire off Eastbourne

Nov 17, 2025 09:54

On the morning of Nov 12, 2025, the All-Weather Lifeboat 'Esme Anderson' launched to assist the 'Finnwave', en route from Rosslare to Zeebrugge, about 11 nautical miles south-east of Eastbourne, after the ship issued a Mayday distress call reporting an engine fire. The lifeboat made best speed in moderate seas and force five winds. En route, it was confirmed the vessel’s crew had successfully extinguished the fire but had lost engine power. On arrival, the RNLI volunteers confirmed no one required evacuation and were requested to stand by the drifting vessel, while the crew worked to deploy their anchor. The lifeboat stood by for over an hour in challenging sea conditions until the anchor was deployed and holding at 6.30 a.m. UTC (Lat. 50.6717 Lng. 0.5132). Once the vessel was safely anchored, the Solent Coastguard released the lifeboat, and the lifeboat returned to station. The Solent Coastguard remained in contact with the vessel while repairs were carried out. The ship raised anchor at around 2 p.m. and finally arrived in Zeebrugge at 9.40 p.m. and remained stationary in port as of Nov 17. The tanker after having been resecured continued its voyage from Sillamae to Rotterdam on Mar 17 at 1.40 a.m.
