Sanctioned tanker turned around in Strait of Hormuz
The 'Elpis' was in the Strait of Hormuz and headed into the Gulf of Oman just as the US blockade began on April 13, 2026. It appeared to have stopped out of the narrow waterway and off the Iranian coast. The 'Elpis' had docked at an Iranian port in the gulf before attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, meaning it would be a potential target for a patrolling US navy vessel. The ship was sanctioned by the US last year under its former name 'Chamtang' over its links to the Iranian oil trade.
Detention in Quanzhou
The 'Elpis' was detained on Oct 2, 2025 in the port of Quanzhou. The detention was conducted by the Tokyo MoU authorities as the result of an inspection, which revealed 17 deficiencies, ten of which were being regarded as seriously and grounds for a detemtion. The tanker had arrived in the port enroute from Zhenjiang on Sep 28.
