Grounding in Littlephampton

Mar 31, 2021 19:17

On March 30, 2021, the 'Elise' broke lose from its moorings in Littlehampton, West Sussex, and drifted across the shipping channel before running aground in the mouth of the River Arun. The 'Elise' had entered the harbour on March 30, coming from Antwerp, at 1.15 a.m. and docked at 1.45 a.m., when unloading of its cargo began. As the tide fell and she settled on to her mud berth, one of her mooring lines parted at 3.30 a.m. The vessel’s stern then moved out approximately 30 metres into the river before coming to rest on the remaining mooring lines. The harbour tug 'Erica' was dispatched to the scene, and harbour staff assisted in putting further lines ashore. The vessel was stuck along her full length with sufficient lines ashore. No damage to the vessel, pollution or injuries were reported. For other ships there was enough room to squeeze past close to the western bank. A 300-metre stretch of the river was closed as the tide rose to protect other users of the river. At 2 p.m. the 'Elise' was freed by the tug, secured back at the berth and continued offloading its cargo.
