No activities from ship owner two weeks after ship grounded near Suez Canal
The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has issued a formal statement regarding the stranded 'Fener', which has remained grounded off the coast of Port Said for more than two weeks. The Authority clarified that the vessel was lying outside its legal jurisdiction, noting that it could not initiate salvage operations without an official request from the shipowner or relevant legal authorities. However, the SCA issued a stern warning to the owner, stating they would be held liable for any potential environmental or economic repercussions resulting from the worsening situation. Fve miles west of the Suez Canal’s northern entrance in the Mediterranean, the vessel posed no threat to maritime navigation within the waterway. The SCA confirmed that, to date, no formal requests for technical assistance or salvage services have been received from the owner or any authorized legal entity. The Authority has maintained consistent monitoring of the vessel’s technical status via its specialized marine salvage team. These were are focused on ensuring there were no environmental hazards, specifically the risk of potential fuel leaks. Furthermore, the SCA has communicated with the shipowner through their authorized shipping agent, demanding the vessel’s prompt removal and formalizing the owner’s liability for any economic or environmental consequences. On Jan 28, the Authority submitted a comprehensive technical report on the vessel’s condition at the agent’s request. There was no evidence of fuel leakage.
Grounded ship completely flooded
As of Jan 17, the 'Fener', which was run aground off Port Said, was over 90% submerged. After the sea receded and the storm subsided, only the bow, topped with a flagpole, and the flooded stern remained visible. The ship had departed from East Port Said port carrying 4,000 tons of salt and was heading towards the territorial water, when the captain issued a distress call to the Suez Canal Authority, reporting a large hole in the vessel's hull that caused severe water ingress. His request to the Suez Canal Authority to run the ship ashore was permitted. Report with photos: https://www.elbalad.news/6838398
Sinking cargo ship run aground off Port Said
On Jan 13, 2026, at 11.30 p.m. the 'Fener', with 12 crew members on board, was intentionally run aground off the Suez Canal at the western anchorage area north of Port Said, approximately five miles west of the canal’s northern entrance in the Mediterranean Sea. The ship was grounded outside the canal’s waterway. It had arrived from Istanbul on Jan 9 in order to load a shipment of salt at East Port Said, bound for Giurgiulesti. After departing the port, deteriorating weather conditions prompted the master to request anchorage in the Port Said waiting area until the conditions improved. It moored in pos. 31° 17' N 032° 18' E. tDue to a technical malfunction of the propulsion, the crew lost control of the vessel's direction. It was subsequently carried towards the coast by the currents and winds and hit the bottom..The SCA’s maritime rescue team received a report from the vessel indicating a breach in one of its holds, which led to water ingress. The ship developed a list of about 10 degrees to starboard sode and was at risk of sinking. As a precautionary measure, and prior to the arrival of a rescue team, the master maneuvered the vessel south of the anchorage area to aground it to prevent a complete sinking. The ship was resting on the shore with the stern submerged and waves crashing over the deck. The canal authority immediately mobilised two tugs and deployed three Bahar-class marine launches to the site, which rescued the crew. One crew member who had sustained a shoulder dislocation, received the necessary medical care at the SCA-affiliated canal mooring and lights hospital. The navigation through the Suez Canal continued at normal rates and remained unaffected. The SCA’s crisis and disaster management center was closely monitoring developments. On Sep 15, the ship was completely flooded with the stern submerged.
