Damaged bulk carrier towed to recycling yard
The 'Federal Yamaska' has been renamed 'Muin' for the last voyage, which commenced on April 15 at 5 a.m. from the Montreal Section 41 with tug assistance en route to the Marine Recycling Corporation in Edwardsville for dismantling. The operation will involve five tugs, with the 'Tim McKeil' (IMO: 9017604) serving as the lead tow tug and the 'Lois M.' (IMO: 9017616) acting as the tail tug as far as Les Escoumins. The 'Beverly M1' (IMO: 9084047) provided additional support. Two Groupe Ocean tugs assisted in pulling the vessel off the dock. River pilots were aboard both the tow and tail tugs to support navigation. The vessel has been laid up in Montreal since August 2025 after running aground near Verchères. She was bound from Brazil to Montreal with sugar at the time. During the incident, the propeller struck bottom, resulting in significant main engine damage. On Aug. 13, five tugs failed to move the ship. A lightering operation began on Aug. 15, in order to free the vessel. With repair costs deemed uneconomical, the decision was made to decommission and scrap the vessel. Following her sale to Marine Recycling, the ship has remained idle through the winter, awaiting suitable conditions for towage. The ship reached the port of Montreal on Aug 17 with tug assistance. The 'Federal Yamaska' had run aground near Verchères, Quebec, on Aug 12, at around 5:45 a.m. following a complete loss of engines.
