On Oct 15 at 4 a.m. WIB, another fire broke out after a powerful explosion in a cargo tank aboard the 'Federal II', which was still drydocked for reparis and conversion works at the PT ASL Marine Holdings in Tanjung Uncang, Batam, and has caused the deaths of 12 workers, and injuring many more, who were taken to hospitals and treated for burns and smoke inhalation. The explosion also sparked panic in the industrial area, and the evacuation process continued until the early morning. Dozens of ambulances were rushing from the shipyard area to referral hospitals to transport victims with serious burns. Approximately 31 victims were rushed to several hospitals in Batam, including the Elisabeth Batu Aji Hospital, the Embung Fatimah Hospital, the Mutiara Aini Hospital, and the Graha Hermin Hospital. The victims were workers at subcontractors PT Rotary and PT Putra Teguh Mandiri (PTM) who were welding and maintaining a ship's tank. The fire had quickly engulfed the hull. After the firefighters and emergency teams arrived on the scene, the fire was brought under control within an hour. Workers caught in the accident were quickly rushed to nearby hospitals. Ten people died in the accident, and more than 18 people injured are in the hospitals being treated for burns and smoke inhalation. In the fire on June 24, four workers died. The authorities have launched an investigation into the fire. The police was focusing on possible safety lapses and welding sparks that may have ignited residual gases and fumes. The investigators have sealed the area and are taking witness statements. A fire broke out aboard the 'Federal II', which was undergoing repair in Batam, on the afternoon of June 24, 2025, killing four workers and injuring five others. The tanker, which was serving as a floating storage and offloading (FSO) unit, was docked at ASL Shipyard at the time of the incident. The fire erupted while workers were inside the ship’s oil storage tanks. They were carrying out the task of cutting steel plates. All nine were Indonesians carrying out repair work on the vessel. Of the five survivors, four suffered severe burns and were receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. Emergency crews battled the flames for several hours before bringing the fire under contro by the ASL Shipyard’s internal safety team.
