Drifting purse seiner collided with buoy layer
In the night of July 29, 2019, July), the RNLI volunteer crew at Penlee launched the all-weather lifeboat to respond to a fishing vessel after it fouled its propeller while hauling in a seine net. At 9.50 p.m. the "Ivan Ellen" launched to the 55-foot local vessel with four persons on board, which had required immediate assistance in poor weather conditions in Mountโs Bay. The vessel was unable to manoeuvre due to the strong south-easterly winds and had drifted towards and then collided with the "Galatea" which was at anchor south of Penzance. The large net then got tangled in the "Galatea"โs propellers. The lifeboat arrived on scene at 10.05 p.m. After assessing the situation, the crew decided to get a tow on the fishing vessel to prevent any further collision with the "Galatea". As the large seine net was still in the sea, there was a risk that the lifeboat would also get her propellers fouled. Using the "Ivan Ellen"โs large spotlights to keep clear of the net, the lifeboat crew managed to connect a tow to the fishing vessel. The net was cut away and the fishing vessel was towed safely and slowly back towards Newlyn in 6-7 south-easterly winds and rough seas at low tide. The boat managed to tow the fishing vessel into the harbour to a berth at the Newlyn Fish Market. Galatea surveyed Emsstrom wreck
On Jan 19, 2013, the "Galatea" was over the sunken wreck of the "Emsstrom" for extra survey work possibly because of the outcome of the meeting that took place ealier this week in Torbay and attended by all interested parties and being reported a possibility of the vessel to be refloated because of its dangerous postion. The vessel is laying very close to the recognised Deep Draughted Anchorage for VLCC and also very close to the westbound approach to vessels landing 'Deep Sea/North Sea Pilots' at Brixham Pilot Station, plus the fact that the vessel is very close to the Southerly approach and waiting area for vessels entering the small commercial port of Teignmouth.
