Tanker fined for pollution
On Jan 24, 2022, the Magistrate's Court in Haifa has imposed a fine of US$ 97,000 on the 'Alexandria' for polluting the sea, while berthed in the port of Haif on Sep 25, 2020. The vessel had carried out operations to remove ballast water near the refueling dock. As a part of the discharge of the water into the sea, the vessel spilled oil into the sea, thus causing pollution of the sea with oil.

The European Maritime Safety Agency, EMSA, has signed a new contract to provide pollution response by using the Cyprus-based tanker Alexandria. “The newly contracted vessel considerably strengthens EMSA’s oil-spill response coverage of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, a sensitive sea area given its proximity to major oil transport routes transiting the Suez Canal, and those originating in Black Sea and Middle-Eastern ports”, EMSA states in a press release. The Alexandria is controlled by Petronav Ship Management Limited, a Cypriot Company. The contract is worth EUR 4.5 million. Source: Shipgaz news, http://www.shipgaz.com/news/top20/top4_news.php
