Cabo Star replaced by Blue Wave Harmony

Jan 07, 2026 12:54

The Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago has chartered the ropax ferry 'Blue Wave Harmony' (9007283), which had served on the route Iskenderun-Haifa until November 2025, to replace the 'Cabo Star', when its lease has expired on Jan12, 2026, representing a significant upgrade, with four main engines to improve redundancy and reduce service disruptions, as well as heavier-duty loading ramps to accommodate bulk and specialised cargo. The ferry was expected to arrive in Trinidad around Jan 18, subject to weather conditions and the completion of regulatory and operational clearances. According to the National Infrastructure Development Company Limited (NIDCO), the acquisition followed a managed procurement process aimed at improving operational compatibility at the ports in Port of Spain and Scarborough, while increasing cargo capacity, passenger comfort, safety and reliability. In the interim, the Trinidad and Tobago Inter-Island Transportation Company Limited has implemented contingency arrangements using existing vessels, including the 'A.P.T. James', 'T&T Spirit' and 'Galleons Passage' in order to ensure the continued movement of essential cargo between Trinidad and Tobago. The 'Blue Wave Harmony' is certified to transport dangerous and specialised cargo and will not require scheduled dry-docking in 2026, allowing for uninterrupted operations. The upgraded facilities were expected to create opportunities for local employment and service providers.

Ferry's lease end in January

Dec 17, 2025 13:28

The 'Cabo Star', which has been providing cargo transport services to TT’s inter-island seabridge since 2017, has been sold by Bridgemans Services Group and will not be available for a renewal of contract when it ends on Jan 12, 2026. The government had no obligation to renew any lease. The THA was aware the lease of the 'Cabo Star' was expiring, but had no idea it was sold. Discussions on the expiring lease were held between the THA and central government during its dry-docking between July 12 and Aug 3. Office of the Procurement Regulator (OPR) rules must be followed in the acquisition of a new ferry. The THA was expecting to receive the plan of action from the ministry by the end of December.

Sick man had flu and not coronavirus

Mar 20, 2020 11:53

A man who felt unwell on the 'Cabo Star' was deemed to have the flu, not the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on March 19, 2020. He was examined by health officials around 7.00 a.m. The ship had arrived in Trinidad from Tobago, and the patient was taken via ambulance to the Port of Spain General Hospital. THe Trinidad and Tobago national had no recent travel history and based on observations from medical officials it appeared that he had a lower respiratory tract infection, commonly associated with the flu. The medical experts at Port of Spain General Hospital did not think it was a suspected COVID-19 case of any sort. Out of an abundance of caution the people aboard were prevented from disembarking until the relevant information was obtained. The contacts of those on the vessel were taken including 61 passengers and 31 crew members, and they will be contacted to see if any symptoms develop. The Trinidad and Tobago Inter-island Transportation Company Limited (TTIT) said in a statement that the crew member was cleared of any COVID-19 symptoms and the vessel was given clearance to continue service by Port Health and the Chief Medical Officer. The ferry was sanitised and clearance was given permission to resume operations. It was scheduled to sail at 5.00 p.m. on

Passengers choked toilets with rocks, lemons and clothings

Mar 26, 2018 12:02

Malfunctioning toilets on the "Cabo Star" on March 24, 2018, forced passengers to relieve themselves inside and overboard the vessel during nine hours of sailing between T&T. The recent malfunctioning was a result of rocks, lemons and clothing placed in the toilet by passengers which choked the vessel’s sewer system, according to the Port Authority. The toilets had not functioned for five hours. Already on March 22 the toilet facilities were clogged by rocks and had to be cleared. On March 24, again the system was affected and repaired within hours. A similar situation had previously occurred where lemons and pieces of clothing were found in the system, as she appealed to passengers to refrain from placing objects in the toilets since this was against the law to maliciously tamper or destroy the authority’s property.
