Eco-Colonel

A fire broke out aboard 'Eco Colone' at Paradip Port on Nov 30, 2025, at 12:55 a.m., while thermal coal was being loaded onto the bulk carrier via a conveyor belt at the Chennai Radha berth in the port of Paradip. The ship was shifted to the CQ-2 berth, and the firebrigade started sprinkling water on the hot coal to control the blaze. The fire was finally doused at 2:10 am. It was suspected to have been caused by the lack of water sprinkling on the coal prior to loading. The ship had arrived at the Iron Ore Berth to load 30,000 metric tonnes of coal. After the cargo was loaded, dock workers saw thick smoke coming from stacker-1. Some machinery and the boom conveyor sustained damage because of the ash which had accumulated. Stacker-1 was burnt in the incident. An investigation was underway to determine the exact cause of the incident. Coal can experience heating due to trapped moisture, improper ventilation or self-oxidation within cargo holds or stockpiles.
