Patrol boat moved away from Eckerö Linjen's quay
On the evening of March 4, the crew of the patrl boat 'KBV 202' was able to move the ship under its own power, by bypassing the control system, to a berth in Grisslehamn where it was no longer in the way of the 'Eckerö'. Eckerö Linjen's traffic to Åland was since able to be operating as usual. In case of severe ice, the Coast Guard uses a berth in Grisslehamn instead of the home port in Gävle. The 'KBV 202' was supposed to leave Grisslehamn to return to Gävle, when the accident occurred on March 4 at around 10 a,m, in connection with the starting of the engines. For an unknown reason, the engines did not stop, which led to the ship moving away from the quay and towards the berthed 'Eckerö' and further into the quay. The Coast Guard reported the incident to the Swedish Transport Agency and to the Police Authority, which was investigating it, in parallel with the Coast Guard's internal investigation. The police have carried out a sobriety check on the crew of the 'KBV 202' without any complaints.
Coast Guard ship ran into ferry
On the morning of March 4, the Swedish Coast Guard vessel 'KBV 202' (IMO: 4645224) allided with the 'Eckerö', which operates the Grisslehamn-Åland route and was moored at the Eckerö Line ferry berth in Grisslehamn. The accident occurred just before departure from the port at 10 a.m. for Åland. The Coast Guard ship drove forward at full speed and crashed straight into the quay after hitting the ferry several times. The impact into the quay caused a huge hole in the bow of the 'KBV 202'. No injuries were reported. The ferry sustained hull damage at port side above the waterline. At 11.24 a.m. the shipping company announced that the departures at 10.00 a.m. from Grisslehamn (local time) and 01.30 p.m. from Eckerö were cancelled. At 12.23 p.m. the information was updated: that all departures on March 4 were suspended. The Swedish passengers have been allowed to disembark and were transported away from the port by bus. The ferry suffered a hole in the hull at port side which was welded and repaired during the evening of March 4. Personnel from the Swedish Transport Agency proceeded to Grisslehamn to inspect the work. Eckerölinjen carried out the repair in dialogue with the Swedish Transport Agency. Traffic was resumed on March 5 according to schedule. The dock, which the Coast Guard vessel hit, was also examined with X-ray equipment to ensure that no damage has occurred. The incident has been reported to the Swedish Transport Agency and the Police Authority, which were investigating the incident. The Ålanders were now waiting for a technical inspection of the damage and then will have the Coast Guard boat removed. It could not move away on its own, so it will probably have to be salvaged, It remained stationary as of March 5 in Grisslehamn. The cause of the accident was unknown. Man missing after jumping overboard
A man has been missing after jumping overboard from the 'Eckerö' on the evening of March 1, 2026. The surveillance cameras showed that a person jumped overboard when the ship was in Swedish waters. The master of the 'Eckerö' contacted the MRCC in Turku when the ferry arrived in Eckerö. The person had been seen when the ferry departed from Grisslehamn but was not on board when they arrived. A rescue helicopter from Turku and the coastguard from Mariehamn searched for the man, and the 'Eckerö' was also out searching. There was confirmation via the surveillance cameras that someone had jumped, it turned out that it happened in Swedish waters. The Swedish MRCC contacted a doctor about how long one could survive in the water and searched for a long time without finding anyone. According to the rules of the law, the person should not have been alive.
Report: Inadequate training contributed to accident
An accident aboard the 'Eckerö', on Oct 13, 2023, in which two people were injured and a car was crushed under a hanging deck, happened as a result of the automatic control of the so-called hanging tires being broken, the Swedish Accident Commission stated in its report, which was published on Sep 30, 2024. At the same time, there were deficiencies in the safety functions for controlling the suspension decks manually, the accident commission wrote. The sailor who operated the hanging deck had not done so for a long time. Inadequate training of the staff was listed as a contributing cause of the accident. The suspension deck was also built and installed in a way that made the structure vulnerable to accidents. Inadequate repairs contributed to the platform's cable slack giving way under load. Eckerölinjen has been given time until January to ensure that the systems work and that the staff receives sufficient training.
Car ramp crashed onto quay
The "Eckerö" damaged its roro ramp in Grisslehamn on Dec 7, 2014 after having entered the port. A wire of the ramp broke, and the ramp smashed onto the quay within two seconds. One car almost was hit by the broken wire. The 188 passengers in 65 vehicles had to wait for two hours before being allowed to disembark. They were served with coffee and snacks. The "Eckerö" had to turn around so that the cars could leave via the stern ramp. All departures on that day were cancelled. The ramp has now been lifted and was to be repaired during the week. Loading and unloading of cars will therefore be continued via the stern ramp until further notice. The "Eckerö" returned to service on Dec 8 at 10:00 a.m. LT from Grisslehamn. The scheduled departure from Eckerö at 8.30 a.m. was cancelled.
