Mom of girl who fell over board while posing for photos will not face criminal charges
The mom of the five-year-old girl who fell overboard from the 'Disney Dream', while posing for photos, on June 29 will not face criminal charges. It was previously unclear what led to the girl’s fall as the ship was returning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from the Bahamas. The Broward County State Attorney's Office has called the incident merely accidental. The family had been walking on Deck 4 of the ship at 11:30 a.m. local time as the mom was snapping some photos of her daughter. When the girl climbed onto a railing and sat down facing her mom, she lost her balance and fell backward, out of a porthole into the ocean. The mom didn’t believe her daughter fell into the water at first since she assumed there was a glass barrier on the porthole, and then once she realized what happened, she screamed for help. The dad, who was about 10 feet ahead of them, turned around to see his daughter in the water. After the couple attempted to get help from the crew, he jumped overboard to save his daughter. The ship’s “Man Overboard” protocol was initiated, and a rescue boat was sent at 11:40 a.m. About 10 minutes later, the boat retrieved the dad and his daughter. They were subsequently taken to the ship’s medical center. The girl was reported to have mild hypothermia and minor lactic acidosis, which is when lactic acids build up in your blood when your tissues are deprived of oxygen. But her dad had two spinal fractures, along with lactic acidosis and hypothermia. The mom was not charged with a count of Child Neglect Without Great Bodily Harm as she was “innocently” taking photos of her daughter, believing that there was “some sort of protective barrier between the railing and the water. “This was an isolated incident, and all evidence shows that it was merely accidental.” The prosecutor also noted the mom was supervising her daughter: “While the defendant's conduct is arguably negligent and irresponsible, it does not rise to the egregious level of conduct necessary to establish criminal culpable negligence,” Report with photo and video: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/disney-cruise-mom-daughter-overboard-charges-b2848965.html
After rumours on so-called social media - police set record straight: Father did NOT lift his daughter on railing for photo
Rumors circulating initially villainized the 37-year-old father, who jumped behind his daughter from the 'Disney Dream', claiming he lifted his daughter on top of a 3.5ft railing for the sake of a photo have been set straight. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the little girl was not being held by her father in the moments before the fall. The girl was on the railing and fell backwards through a porthole, Sheriff Gregory Tony said on July 2. He noted that the father hadn’t placed the child on the railing but did not specify who did or whether the child climbed on top alone. At some point, the mother raised the alarm and alerted her husband, who didn’t see the incident. He then jumped into the ocean to save his daughter, Moments after the girl plunged into the water, the father kept his daughter alive by treading the water with her for 20 minutes until rescuers arrived with a tender that was launched from the ship. Child who fell over board rescued by father who jumped behind her
On June 29, 2025, a five year old girl fell overboard from deck 4 of the 'Disney Dream' between the Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale, while the ship was returning to Fort Lauderdale from a four-night Bahamian sailing, including a stop at Disney’s Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Her father jumped right after her. The emergency code “Mr. M.O.B.” (man overboard) rang out over the ship’s intercom, signaling an urgent response. The ship stopped and turned around. Crew members launched life preservers and four men deployed an MOB at port side within 10 minutes. The father, who had been treading water for about 20 minutes, and his daughter were found by the lifeboat within 3-5 minutes. The 'Disney Dream' resumed its voyage five minutes after the operation was concluded, with the captain making a statement that two persons were rescued. The incident began at 11:15 a.m., and the pair were rescued by 11:47 a.m. LT.It remained unclear how the child fell overboard, despite the ship’s plexiglass safety barriers. The ship returned safely to Port Everglades early on June 30 , ending the cruise as planned despite the incident. It was still unclear why the girl fell over board, with contradicting reports by witnesses.
