Blacklisted Russian tanker seized in Egypt raises concerns - crew appeals for help
The sanctioned 'Dignity' has been seized after it failed to pay its Suez Canal tolls. The tanker has been held south of the canal for more than a month as it returned to the waterway on a ballast leg from the Middle East. The Russian ship was blacklisted by the US, UK and the EU in 2025. As of Nov 3, it remained stationary in pos. 29° 50' N 032° 35' E. The crew on the 'Dignity' have appealed for urgent help. The vessel has been owned and managed by the Russian company Argo Tanker Group since 2023. The Egyptian maritime agency Sphinx accused the owner of failing to settle financial debts owed to its local representative. Following Sphinx's request, the Ismailia Economic Court ordered the precautionary seizure of the vessel in the port of Suez until full payment of the outstanding amounts. The last recorded inspection for the tanker was in May 2023. It has been cited by the USA for its involvement in the Russian oil trade and violations of the G7 price cap on crude oil transactions. Port calls in Murmansk led to the tanker being included in a U.S. sanctions package released in January 2025, and since then, the EU listed the vessel in July, and the UK sanctioned the tanker in September. The 22 Russian crew members have filed a formal complaint on Oct 15, demanding payment of back wages for at least three months from their employer. They reported that as of Oct 28, no money had been transferred to them. The Russian Union of Seafarers (SUR) has intervened on behalf of the crew already in August, when the crew was due approximately $130,000 in back wages that the union and the Russian Maritime Registry of Shipping were able to secure for the crew. This time, they are concerned that, in addition to the back pay, the owners were not properly supplying the vessel. The tanker was running low on fuel and lubricants, and the union feared the lack of supplies may be threatening the power on the ship. The SUR was currently on site to monitor the situation and hoped that the owner would fulfill its obligations.
Sanctioned Russian oil transferred in Gulf of Oman
There was evidence of transshipments of sanctioned Russian oil at transfer locations in the Gulf of Oman, destined for delivery to the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery in Punjab, a facility co-owned by Mittal Energy. Involved were four sanctioned tankers, which each loaded in Murmansk, the 'Belgorod' (IMO: 9412359), 'Danshui' (IMO: 9589750), 'Dignity' and 'Primorye' (IMO: 9421960). All tankers were sanctioned by the USA (OFAC), UK (OFSI) and the EU. The receiving vessel was the 'Samada' (IMO: 9286281), owned by the Seychelles-registered Erika Freight Ltd,m which uses an address associated with multiple dark fleet vessels. The STS took place in an area 40 nautical miles due east of Sohar, outside Omani territorial waters. The four tankers from Murmansk switched off their AIS transponders as they approached the Gulf of Oman, whilst the 'Samadha' sent out a spoofed AIS signal suggesting that it made a circular journey from India to Oman before turning back, without meeting any of the Russian shadow tankers. The value of the four loads transported between July and September has been estimated as $280 million. The OFSI sanctioned the 'Samadha' on Oct 15, 2025, the EU had already sanctioned the vessel on July 20. The tanker for the moment remained free of OFAC sanctions. Sanctions databases linked the 'Samadha' at some point to what is now the NorthStandard P&I Association, but the post-sanctions insurance relationship is not clear. The 'Samadha' has unloaded at Mundra on the Gujarati coast, the head of the 625-mile crude pipeline to the Guru Gobind Singh refinery, which is a joint venture between the state-owned Hindustan Petroleum Company and the Mittal Energy Ltd. The executive chairman of Arcelor Mittal is Lakshmi Mittal, who has recently announced that for tax reasons he will be giving up his UK residency. Arcelor Mittal has substantial steel and mining investments in both the EU and the UK. The latest AIS data has put the 'Samadha' off the coast of Russia's Kola Peninsula, en route to Murmansk.
