Cable layer assisted in rescue of Russian single hand sailor who was later arrested

Feb 17, 2016 11:47

The "Deep Energy" was involved in the rescue operation for a Russian yachtsman who ran aground off the west coast of Scotland at Skerryvore Lighthouse, near the Isle of Tiree.amid strong winds and extremely rough waves. The coastguard received a mayday call from the sailor just after midnight on Feb 16, 2016. The lifeboat from Islay reached the yacht near the Skerryvore lighthouse, close to the Isle of Tiree, at 3.30 a.m. and the boat from Barra was sent to assist. The winds in the area were gusting at severe gale force with extremely rough seas which created a very testing environment in which this rescue could be carried out. The yachtsman was finally airlifted ashore and the RNLI lifeboats are returning to base. Rescue crews have been trying to attach a line to the yacht but failed. The cable-laying vessel was called to the scene to provide shelter from the weather. The 35 year old man has later been arrested and is detained in police custody in connection with an international arrest warrant.
